More Whole Grains Yield Less Cardiovascular, All-Cause Deaths

In adjusted analyses, only bran consumption remained significant in reducing the risk for death, and it was effective in the prevention of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Higher consumptions of general whole grain, cereal fiber, and germ did not independently affect mortality outcomes.

Beyond this study, there has been mixed evidence as to whether whole-grain consumption can significantly improve mortality outcomes. The current study by Wu and colleagues provides a broader analysis of the Nurses’ Health Study as well as the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study to better understand this issue.
